"... where the straight way was lost". That's the first sentence of "The Divine Comedy" - the most difficult and mysterious poems written by Dante Alighieri. In the story he describes his soul's journey through the afterlife. What makes the poem so fascinating and up-to-date although it was written in the beginning of the XIV century?
The answer lies in the reason of Dante's writing. After the death of his dearest Beatrice and being exciled from Florence because of political issues he found in the "dark forest" himself.
When he wrote:
“You will leave behind everything you love most dearly,
and this is the arrow, the bow of exile first lets fly.”
he had to know what the hell is.
But these troubles and suffering enabled him to speak of the soul. Dante during his wandering through the hell, pulgatory and paradise managed to gain the view of human life and discover that somehow we are connected to the rythm of the Universe which makes our life meaningful.
In this black forest Dante meets his master - the Latin poet Virgil. He tells Virgil that it was his long study and great love which led him to understanding the ancient poem: “The Aeneid”. As a result Virgil becomes his guide through the dark wood.
It sounds like blah blah but in the same way  when we will find ourselves in a dark wood one day, Dante's words can help us refuse to surrender.
Here is a text which proves that "The Divine Comedy" helps to get over:
